Reducing Radon

The method of reducing radon concentrations in a home or building is called radon mitigation.  A mitigation system is effective because it prevents the radon from entering the home by drawing it from below the house and venting it above the home, where the radon quickly dilutes.  Most homes are mitigated by sub-slab depressurization, where a negative pressure field is created below the slab preventing the entry of radon gas into the home.  If a home has a crawlspace or areas that are in direct contact with soil or rock, a sub-membrane depressurization system is performed.  During this process, plastic sheeting is installed over the exposed soil or rock and suction is created to draw out the radon gas.

Benefits of Radon Mitigation Systems

Mitigation systems do more than just reduce radon to healthy levels, they also have other secondary benefits.  The indoor air quality is improved.  A mitigation system will also lower other soil gases that may be present, such as carbon dioxide, methane, and other volatile organic chemicals, and may reduce the amount of humidity or dampness in the basement as well.  A properly installed mitigation system can make your home a much healthier place to live.
